UWorld Partners with The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation to Grant over $70,000 in Scholarship Support and Product Awards

UWorld will provide critical learning resources to 2024 Goldwater Scholars interested in pursuing medical research careers

(DALLAS, TX) March 29, 2024UWorld, a leading provider of learning tools for high-stakes exams, is partnering with The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation to grant over $70,000 in financial support and product awards to the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation through its philanthropic arm, UWorld Cares. As the Foundation’s first private partner, UWorld’s support expands the number of scholarship opportunities for the next generation of research leaders in STEM, and provides best-in-class resources for the 2024 Goldwater Scholars pursuing careers in medical research.

As part of the partnership, UWorld will provide 72 2024 Goldwater Scholars pursuing a MD/PhD access to their premier MCAT QBank. Additionally, along with scholarship financial support, UWorld will provide six Goldwater Scholars with full access to their extensive USMLE Step 1 QBank. The resources will assist the Scholars as they prepare for their medical school entrance and professional licensure exams that serve as crucial checkpoints for their future success. The six UWorld-supported Goldwater Scholars are:

  • Kevin Mercado-Rosado, a junior at the University of Puerto Rico – Humacao, pursuing an MD/PhD in neuroscience with a focus on neurodegenerative diseases
  • Amena Shamia, a sophomore at CUNY LaGuardia Community College, pursuing an MD/PhD in microbiology and immunology
  • Paul Nguyen, a sophomore at the University of Southern Alabama, double majoring in chemical engineering and music (piano)
  • Marion (Easton) Cahill, a junior at West Virginia University, pursuing an MD/PhD in biochemistry and molecular medicine from West Virginia University’s Eye Institute
  • Rebeca Rodriguez, a junior at Wellesley College, pursuing a PhD in immunology and M.D. with a specialty in oncology, and
  • Shirya Siddhartha, a sophomore at Southern Methodist University, pursuing an MD/PhD in neuroscience.

This year 1,353 science, engineering, and mathematics students were nominated by 446 academic institutions to compete for the 2024 Goldwater scholarships. Goldwater scholarships were awarded to 438 college students from across the United States in 2024, which when added to the 70 college sophomores who received the Goldwater scholarship in 2023 and are in their second year of support brings the total number of supported Scholars in 2024 to 508. Of the 438 new Scholars in 2024, 57 intend to pursue research careers in mathematics and computer science, 237 in the sciences, 80 in medicine, and 64 in engineering and materials research.
