A Passion for Math Research Leads to Goldwater Scholarship

Kerry Seekamp ’26, a mathematics major at Smith College and a three-time captain of the track and field team, is one of three Smithies named 2025 Goldwater Scholars, alongside Annabelle Li ’26 and Sanjana Yasna ’26. She got her start by answering an email from her liberal arts adviser, Professor Julianna Tymoczko, and now studies graphs called “webs” and algebraic combinatorics — “basically the study of counting things,” as she puts it — mapping their relationships to graph theory and representation theory. Seekamp has also completed research experiences at East Texas A&M University, the University of South Florida, and the University of Minnesota Duluth, working on cryptography, coding theory, and combinatorics. She plans a doctorate in mathematics and a career in math research.
