Caly Ferguson, a mechanical engineering senior at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will be honored with a National Society of Black Engineers “25 Under 25” award — recognition that follows the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship he won the previous year as one of three UMBC recipients. A Meyerhoff Scholar and president of UMBC’s NSBE chapter, Ferguson has worked since his first year in Professor Ramana Vinjamuri’s lab developing a prosthetic forearm and hand that uses machine learning to interpret electrical signals from nerves and translate them into movement. He is focused on making biomedical devices more affordable so more people can benefit. Ferguson is running for a regional NSBE executive board seat and plans to stay involved after graduation.
