South alumna named Goldwater Scholar for Parkinson’s research

Zosia Greer, a Grosse Pointe South High School graduate now studying at Oberlin College, has been named a 2026 Barry Goldwater Scholar for her research on Parkinson’s disease. Greer credits her high school biology classes with turning an inkling of interest into a direction, and joined a research lab in her first year at Oberlin. Her project uses a genetic mouse model to test more accessible treatments, waiting until symptoms develop before beginning treatment and then tracking both behavior and molecular change. Early results suggest improvement at the molecular level even where behavior has not shifted. Greer intends to earn a doctorate and become a professor, and her advice to students drawn to science is plain: “Anyone can do science if you’re really passionate about it.”
