Cole Woody, a sophomore biology major at the University of Houston, has won both the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and the Phi Beta Kappa Key into Public Service award. His research develops potential cancer vaccines built on chimeric RNAs: “Chemotherapy is like a nuclear bomb. It’s not specific, and it damages healthy cells,” he said. “These vaccines are more like a sniper.” Woody built the MHCole Pipeline, a bioinformatic tool that predicts peptide-HLA binding affinities with nearly 100% improvement in data-processing efficiency, and works in the UH Sequencing Core under Professor Preethi Gunaratne and in Dr. Steven Hsesheng Lin’s lab at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He has been accepted to the Harvard/MIT HEART program and plans an M.D.-Ph.D.
