Hon. Mark Kelly

Mark Kelly

Trustee — U.S. Senator, Arizona

United States Senator from Arizona, retired Navy captain and combat veteran, and former NASA astronaut who flew four space missions and commanded the final flight of Space Shuttle Endeavour. Holds degrees in marine engineering and aeronautical engineering.

Mark Kelly’s career spans military service, space exploration, and public office. As a U.S. Navy combat pilot he flew 39 missions in Operation Desert Storm, logged more than 5,000 flight hours in over 50 aircraft, and made more than 375 carrier landings, retiring at the rank of Captain.

Selected as a NASA astronaut in 1996 — in the same class as his identical twin brother, Scott — Kelly first flew as pilot of STS-108 in December 2001, resupplying the International Space Station. Across four missions he spent more than 50 days in space and traveled over 20 million miles, commanding the final flight of Space Shuttle Endeavour before retiring from NASA in 2011.

The son of two police officers and a product of public schools, Kelly earned a B.S. in marine engineering and nautical science from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and an M.S. in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.

Sworn in as a United States Senator for Arizona on December 2, 2020, Kelly has worked across the aisle on pandemic relief, the bipartisan infrastructure law, semiconductor manufacturing, and prescription-drug cost reduction. He is married to former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and lives in Tucson; they have two daughters, Claire and Claudia.
