Hon. Burgess Owens

Trustee — U.S. Representative, Utah

United States Representative from Utah. A biology and chemistry graduate of the University of Miami and Super Bowl champion who played ten NFL seasons, he serves on the House Education and the Workforce Committee and founded a nonprofit serving troubled and incarcerated youth.

Burgess Owens represents Utah’s Fourth Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. Having grown up in the segregated South, he saw diverse communities work together to overcome adversity — an experience that continues to shape his public service.

Owens distinguished himself early both athletically and academically. He was among the first four Black athletes recruited to play football at the University of Miami — earning the university’s third scholarship for Black students — and completed degrees in biology and chemistry. Selected 13th overall in the first round of the 1973 NFL draft by the New York Jets, he played ten professional seasons with the Jets and the Oakland Raiders and won a Super Bowl championship with the 1980 Raiders.

After his NFL career, Owens worked in corporate sales before relocating his family to Utah. Prior to his election to Congress, he founded Second Chance 4 Youth, a nonprofit devoted to helping at-risk and incarcerated young people.

Owens serves on the House Education and the Workforce Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and describes faith, family, free markets, and education as his guiding principles.
