Every year the Foundation identifies far more outstanding young scientists, engineers, and mathematicians than it has the resources to support. Your tax-deductible gift helps close that gap — funding scholarships that let high-achieving undergraduates focus on research rather than tuition.

Why it matters

Students in these fields are expected to do more than attend class. To build the skills a research career demands, they are strongly encouraged to take on faculty-mentored, publishable research while still undergraduates — work that leaves little or no time for the part-time jobs whose income might otherwise help pay for college.

Since 1989 the Foundation has awarded more than 11,600 scholarships. The results speak for the model: in the Foundation’s survey of alumni, 99% of Goldwater Scholars had completed at least one degree, roughly 70% had earned or were completing doctorates, and nearly three in four remained active in research. Goldwater Scholars go on to lead laboratories, university departments, and research programs across the country.
