Trustee — U.S. Representative, Connecticut
United States Representative from Connecticut and former high school history teacher. A senior member of the Ways and Means Committee, he has long argued that “our Nation needs the world’s finest education system” to compete in the global economy.
After serving twelve years in the Connecticut State Senate, John B. Larson (D-CT) was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1998 and has served there since. In 2016, House leadership appointed Representative Larson to the Goldwater Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
Larson has a long-abiding interest in education. He began his career as a high school history teacher and later served on the East Hartford, Connecticut Board of Education. In the House he has been a consistent education advocate — “In order to compete in the global economy, our Nation needs the world’s finest education system” — and sees his service on the Foundation’s Board as helping to achieve that end.
Representative Larson formerly served on the Armed Services Committee and the Science Committee and as Ranking Member of the House Administration Committee. Today he serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, where he is Ranking Member of the Subcommittees on Tax Policy and Social Security.
Born and raised in the Mayberry Village federal housing project in East Hartford, Larson says fondly that he is the product of public housing, public education, and public service. He graduated from Central Connecticut State University in 1971. He and his wife, Leslie, have three children and live in East Hartford.
